The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795. The governing body of the University, from its founding until 1932, was a forty-member Board of Trustees elected by the General Assembly. Joseph John Summerell was a student at the University of North Carolina. He married Ellen Mitchell, daughter of Elisha Mitchell, a professor of geology and chemistry and bursar at UNC. Summerell received his bachelor's degree from UNC in 1842, his master's degree in 1845, and his doctor of medicine from the University of Pennsylvania.
